Movie Review (Widyandini Dwi Prastiwi/33)

1. What is the title of the movie?

     Over The Hedge

2. What is the story about?

RJ is a raccoon, specialist on finding and stealing food, as every raccoon in the world. When RJ can’t get any food out of a machine, he sneaks into Vincent’s cave. During a night, RJ tries to steal all his food, but the raccoon’s ambition makes that all the food loot get lost and makes Vincent wakes up from his sleep. RJ accidentally knocks the food on a wagon out of the cave and on to the road and a van hits it. RJ runs down the rocky hill from the cave and Vincent brutally persues him. RJ claims to get all the food back and Vincent lets him go for a week and threatens to kill him if he doesn’t have all the food by full moon.

            Meanwhile, upon waking up after hibernation, a group of forest animals discover that a tall hedge has appeared out of nowhere, half their forest is gone, they have little to no food left. While Verne, a nerve turtle who acts as leader, suggests they simply adapt, RJ shows up and gives them another option: go over the hedge and get food from the humans! The other forest animals quickly given into RJ, sneaking into the human world to get all the food hey can grab. What they don’t know is that RJ is actually in debt to a hungry bear, who has given him one week to replenish his food supply, or RJ takes it place! Animals headed by a cautious turtle, Verne is worried because spring has come and there’s not enough food for everyone. Verne tells that they will be fine eating plants and some bark. Later, they find that their wood has a frontier, formed by a giant bush. They’re scared of crossing to the other side, where the suburbs exist. Bur RJ comes to the scene, telling that there’s no danger in the suburbs, and that they will find all the food they want there. Nevertheless, Verne distrusts RJ, because he thinks that there’s something suspicious about him, trying to convince the group that natural food for Vincent. A pair of opossums, a family of porcupines, a nerve squirrel and a female skunk, will plan a risky theft to a house, drawing a lot of obstacles, like a silly exterminator, a cat and the neurotic house owner.

            When a hungry bear wakes up to see RJ, steal his provisions and then accidentally throw them all over the streets, he threatens to kill him if he does not return every single item he took from him. RJ has six days to steal from every human’s kitchen he can find. Eventually, Vincent claims RJ”s food back. RJ uses the big load of food to bash I into the Verminator’s van. After knocking the Verminator out, Vincent persues RJ on the van it is driven into big balloons. Vincent s dragged out and up into the air by the balloons and not seen until RJ and other animals go back over the hedge and into the “outdoor woods.” Vincent digs through the hedge while the other animals hide. The Verminator and Gladys, chop through the other side. Eventually, RJ fits Verne The Tortoise’s shell on and Vincent pounces. Hammy drinks something hat makes everything go on slow-motion. He sets the ultimate animal trap, and the slow-motion starts to fade away. RJ is fished out of Vincent’s mouth with a fishing rod by verne  and is flung into the red lights, knocking Gladys and the verminator in as well. It eventually goes off and burns all three of them, but they are still living. Vincent is taken to the rockies mountain while Gladys is arrested and the Verminator is attacked by a dog. 

3. Mention and describe each character in the movie!

RJ ( The Raccoon )

RJ The Raccoon, is the main protagonist in Over The Hedge. He is a carefree raccoon. When RJ steals food from Vincent the bear, he must find food, or else Vincent will kill him.

     VERNE ( The Turtle )

Verne, is one of the main characters in Over The Hedge. He is the leader of the foragers and an easy going, overly cautious, and “naturally tentative” box turtle. 

 

   HAMMY ( The Squirrel )  

Hammy, is a hyperactive squirrel, whose mouth moves as fast as his feet. He is naïve and very childish in nature with an extremely short attention span. He often gets on the nervous of those around him, but endears himself to them at the same time as long as he stays away from the super energy drinks anyway. Hammy can run at the speed of light and has fast reflexes. His favorite food is cookies.

STELLA ( The Skunk ) 

Stella the skunk, is a sassy and short-tempered skunk in Over The

Hedge, who is offened when it is suggested that she needs a male

in her life. Often she back by her impressions of her odor, Stella

hurriedly pushes away anyone, who tries to get close to her. Stella

is currently in relationship with Tiger The Cat. 

OZZIE ( The Possum ) 

Ozzie, is a protagonist of Over The Hedge. He is a possum and has a teenage daughter called Heather.

HEATHER ( The Possum ) 

Heather, is protagonist of Over The Hedge. She is Ozzie`s

teenage daughter and seem a bit annoyed at his dramatic 

behavior. It is unknown who her mother was. She is a Virginia

Opossum, a marsupial.

GLADYS  SHARP ( The Human Wicked) 

        Gladys, a suburban resident who wants to get rid of the animal. She is the main antagonist in Over The Hedge. She seems to have a personal hatred against wild animals. She also Tiger`s former owner.  

 

 THE VERMINATOR ( A.K.A. “Gebzey’LaFontate,” or simple known name as “Dwayne”) 

       Dwayne, was an overweight, evil, bald, selfish exterminator in Over The Hedge, who killed

many critters. Dwayne is over-eager exterminator that Gladys had been hired to do the job. He

wore an orange and yellow exterminator uniform. He had brown hair. 

 

  LOU, PENNY, BUCKY, SPIKE, & QUILLO ( The Porcupine ) 

         Lou, is the star of Over The Hedge. He has a wife called

Penny and three childrens. Bucky, Spike, and Quillo are the

porcupine triplets. They are the children of Lou and Penny.

They love playing video games, including Ultra Homocide 3.

During the car scene in the Dwayne LaFontant’s truck, they can

drive with the wheel.  

  

PRINCE TIGEROUS MAHMOUD “TIGER” SHABOZ ( The Cat ) 

        The Cat, is an obese Persian cat, who is in love with Stella. He speaks with a heavy

Persian accent.

VINCENT ( The Big Bear )

Vincent, is a grizzly bear that lives in a cave above a road. Vincent is a massive American black bear whose ruthless behavior intimidates RJ and later, the other animals.

NUGENT ( The Dog )

Nugent, is a playful Rottweiler whose only intelligible word is "Play!", other than something that sounds like barking.

4. What is your favorite part of the movie?

      ~ When Vincent is dragged off and up into the air by the balloons and not seen until RJ and other animals go back over the hedge.

      ~ When Stella spoke with The Cat.

      ~ When Hammy drinks something that makes everything go on slow motion.

      ~ When Bucky, Spike and Quillo drive Dwayne’s truck.

5. Do you like the movie? Why? Why not?

    Yes, of course because I think this film it’s so funny and interest.
